I'm knocking on 50 years old. I remember when, generally speaking, successful businessmen were held up as role models and admired for their achievements. Look what the political game of class envy has done to us.
Successful celebrities are worshipped. Successful athletes are applauded. Successful politicians are rewarded or at least left alone in the class envy war (unless they are genuinely conservative).
Success is Great for Some and an Indictment for Others
Businessmen are all painted as heartless, greedy and dishonest fatcats. We just KNOW they stepped on a bunch of little people to get their personal hoardes of treasure. Straight from the highest office in the land, we now know that businessmen aren't even responsible for their own success: GOVERNMENT gave them that opportunity, paved the way for them.
Cartoons, Disney movies, kids shows, sitcoms and Hollywood all portray successful businessmen as corrupt, narcissistic manipulators of "the people", all for their selfish gain. Millionaire athletes, applause. Oil company owners, disdain. Billionaire celebrities, worship. Billionaire retail store owners, burn'em. Wealthy liberal politicians, silence (or worse, falsely represented as "common Joe"). Wealthy conservative politicians, "out of touch with the working middle class". Politicians, and yes, primarily liberal ones, are almost solely responsible for demonizing successful business owners as the "wealthy", the "lucky", the "fortunate" who have an unfair portion of the "people's gold". Ironically, and hypocritically, almost every politician who brandishes this class envy sword is themselves, very wealthy (but you don't hear about that). If they were SINCERE, they would give away their wealth to those with less but truth is, facts show these very same politicians give next to NOTHING to charity much less pay extra taxes willingly.
Are there corrupt, greedy, selfish corporate executives and business owners? Of course, just like there are corrupt, greedy, selfish politicians, athletes, celebrities, preachers, whites, blacks, reds, yellows, browns, men, women, gays, straights, liberals, conservatives or any other group you can name.
Role Models and Admirable
The successful business owners of America by and large are hard-working, sacrificial, disciplined and model citizens. You know how i know that? Because the free market will BURY you if you aren't. The corrupt businesses that prosper are frequently tied in to corrupt politicians that give them a truly unfair advantage in return for votes. Contrary to media portrayal, much of the charity of the nation is generated by successful business owners, or through them and their employees.
Don't fall for the media or political propaganda. Admire succesful business owners for what they do and how they enrich America with the overwhelming majority of jobs, opportunity and investment. The only reason America is in a recession is because the GOVERNMENT is strangling them with regulation and taxes while simultaneously demonizing them. Who wouldn't move to another country to protect your hard-EARNED money and reputation? Or hide their "growth money" away until friendlier times return? Class envy politics crushes business, kills the economy, and embitters employees against the very people who can provide them with a better job and more opportunity.
The real "common people" shouldn't let politicians continue to insult and denigrate one of the most admirable groups of people in America: the successful business owner. We need to get back to being a GRATEFUL people instead of discontent whiners begruding the success of others while wishing "more" for ourselves at the expense of someone else. America 2012: take from those who produce to bribe those who don't. Then anger the latter against the former.
America will not survive this mindset very long. Do we have what it takes to change it or have we reached a point where the "takers" outnumber the "achievers"?
