The Lord’s Supper  - 1 Corinthians 11:23-30

1 Corinthians 11:23–25 (NKJV) Institution of the Lord’s Supper

23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying,  “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

  • Jesus Himself commanded the observance of the Lords Supper
  • The Lord’s Supper is primarily an act of remembrance (vv. 24–25); is an act of proclamation (v. 26); is a forward-looking event (v. 26)
  • The Lord’s Supper replaces the Jewish Passover
  • The Lord’s Supper is commanded but the “love feast” or “fellowship meal” is not
  • Frequency: not specified in Scripture; early Church started out doing it every day with a meal, then it seems to be every week (Acts 2:41-42) and “fellowship meal” was not continued as a widespread practice
  • Lord’s Supper was included in four routine activities (Acts 2:41-42): teaching, fellowship, praying & breaking bread
  • Improper observance an result in guilt, judgment, weakness, sickness and even death – 1 Corinthians 11:27–32
  • Four “looks” during Communion:  Look back in remembrance of Christ, Look up and thank God for Christ, Look around and love your brethren, Look forward to Jesus coming back and the day we will eat together in Heaven

When I Survey The Wondrous Cross

When I survey the wondrous cross, On which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss, And pour contempt on all my pride.

Were the whole realm of nature mine, That were a present far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all.

My Jesus I Love Thee

My Jesus, I love Thee, I know Thou art mine; For Thee all the follies of sin I resign;
My gracious Redeemer, my Savior art Thou; If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, ’tis now.

In mansions of glory and endless delight, I’ll ever adore Thee in heaven so bright;
I’ll sing with the glittering crown on my brow, If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, ’tis now.
