• Are the Soul and Spirit Two Different Things?

Are the Soul and Spirit Two Different Things?

A reader asks: Is there a difference between spirit and soul? Someone told me that the spirit is your life, the soul is your mind, will, and emotions. They told me that the spirit that is saved by salvation and you must “work out your souls salvation”. I’m not thinking this is true. What do you say? My answer: That’s a common thing people say but in reality, in Scripture, the spirit and soul and synonymous… it is the eternal part of man, or the living, animated part of animals. Animals have a spirit or soul in the sense that they are alive, or aware, but not eternal and not created in God’s image. Perhaps that’s why the Bible uses the terms together sometimes in the same passage when describing people, to [...]

  • Question: Confronting the Unsaved About Sin

Question: Confronting the Unsaved About Sin

A reader asks: How do you approach or confront a non-Christian going down a sinful path? Do we just love them and leave the convicting to the Holy Spirit? My answer: On a personal level, there is no Christian mandate to confront an unbeliever with anything but the Gospel (a conversation about “the Law” which convicts, and Jesus Christ who saves). An unsaved person should be expected to act according to his state: unsaved. As Christians, we should not be surprised that the spiritually-blind, enslaved-to-wickedness, dead-in-their-sins, unsaved person is committing sin, making poor choices and generally destroying their life. That’s what sin does to people. And the unsaved are incapable of any other type of behavior. Yes, it may be mixed in with some “good” [...]

  • Confused About Divorce While Unsaved

    Confused About Divorce While Unsaved

A reader asks (condensed): I have spoken to many Pastors hear different answers about my situation: raised as Catholic… never new the meaning of Christ. I was married at 21 im going to a non believer… he cheated, I cheated… divorced.  Years later we get back together… he cheated, I cheated… divorced. In 2009, I accepted Christ and was truly saved… asked my ex-husband for forgiveness.  I’ve been told I cannot remarry because I was unequally yoked, because I am divorced. I want to marry a Christian man and do all things for the glory of God and honor him in my new marriage but I want to make sure I’m obeying God’s Word. I want to feel comfortable about this issue. My Answer: First, I rarely write [...]

  • To Help Or Not To Help

To Help Or Not To Help

A reader asks: Part of the work of the Church is benevolence. To what extend can a church carry out the work of benevolence? Does the payment of house rent, medical bills, and money for feeding to members who has lost their jobs; and whose income is inadequate to meet a larger family responsibility part of the church responsibility?  Who gets help and who doesn’t? My answer: This is not a full treatment of the question but rather a general response for your consideration.  You could easily write an entire book on this topic. It has always been the Church’s obligation to help the TRULY poor and needy. That line (who is TRULY in need) has been blurred by a welfare mentality, unprecedented prosperity and the [...]

  • You’ve Got 23,458 Days to To Live

You’ve Got 23,458 Days to To Live

A reader asks: I was wondering, are our days numbered? Is the number of days we live predetermined? I know God knows when and how we die but do we have control over how long we live? My answer: Thousands of years ago, a dude named Job asked God that very same question: Job 7:1 Is there not an APPOINTED TIME to man upon the earth? There is no verse in Scripture that says “The day you are born, God picks a certain number of days for your life, and when you get to that day, it’s asta la vista baby”.  So in that sense, no, the length of your life is not predetermined nor are there any quotes from Arnold Schwarzenegger in the Bible. On [...]

  • Why Do Some People Die Peacefully and Others Horribly?

Why Do Some People Die Peacefully and Others Horribly?

A reader asks: What does the bible say about the way we die? Or what’s your opinion? Some people die peacefully and other so horrifically. Why? My answer: The Bible really doesn’t address the “way” we die but it does address that: We all die Life is but a vapor in eternity (James 4) Suffering here cannot be compared to either the glory of heaven or the hopelessness of hell (Romans 8) We are “scheduled” to die once then face accountability from God (Hebrews 9) To answer your second question we first have to understand one foundational truth: all good things are a blessing from God, and all “bad” things are a result of the sin curse on humanity which entered by Adam in the [...]
